21-Year-Old Charged Over Assault on 82-Year-Old in Ferntree Gully

A 21-year-old man is set to face court after allegedly assaulting an 82-year-old man on the Blind Creek Trail in Ferntree Gully last month, leaving the victim hospitalised.

Police allege the incident began about 1.30pm on Monday, 6 July, when the elderly man asked the younger man to slow down while riding an e-scooter along the trail.

It is alleged the man verbally abused the pensioner before assaulting him multiple times, pushing him to the ground and fleeing the scene on his e-scooter.

Police will further allege the man returned a short time later and assaulted the victim a second time, this time on nearby Rankin Road.

The 82-year-old was taken to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Investigators from Knox Crime Investigation Unit executed a search warrant at a property in Scoresby this morning, where the 21-year-old man was arrested.

He was interviewed by police and is expected to be charged on summons with assault offences.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant dashcam or mobile phone footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a report online.
