Major Operation Targets Impaired Drivers
Police caught 51 drink and drug drivers during a major operation on the Monash Freeway. Operation Colossus ran across Friday and Saturday nights at Dandenong North. During the blitz, officers conducted high volume alcohol and drug testing.
In total, police performed more than 4,000 preliminary breath tests. As a result, 45 drivers returned readings above the legal alcohol limit. Additionally, six drivers tested positive for illicit drugs. Overall, police detected one impaired driver in every 88 tested.
High-Range Reading Leads to Immediate Action
Among those caught, a 33-year-old Clyde North man recorded 0.168. Consequently, police immediately suspended his licence and impounded his vehicle. Meanwhile, Victoria Police reinforced its “zero tolerance” approach to impaired driving. Authorities stressed that motorists who ignore the rules will face serious penalties.
Fines, Suspensions and Tougher Consequences
Fully licensed drivers over 26 who record between 0.05 and 0.07 face a $611 fine. They also receive an immediate three-month licence suspension. However, penalties rise sharply for younger drivers and repeat offenders. Drivers above 0.07 face larger fines and longer suspensions. In addition, courts may order alcohol interlocks or even jail for serious cases. Drivers exceeding prescribed drug limits face a $611 fine and six-month suspension.
Speeding and Licence Offences Detected
Beyond drink and drug driving, police impounded 15 vehicles during the operation. Five drivers travelled more than 45 km/h above the speed limit. Furthermore, officers stopped 15 drivers with unauthorised licences. Police also issued four defect notices for vehicle issues.
More Operations to Come
Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol led Operation Colossus. Uniform members, State Highway Patrol and the Road Policing Drug and Alcohol Section supported the effort. Importantly, Victoria Police will continue similar operations in coming months. Motorists should expect testing anywhere and anytime.
