Taxpayer spending on events draws scrutiny
Big bills for government galas have drawn scrutiny across Victoria in recent weeks.
New documents show more than $830,000 in taxpayer funds supported major events last year.
Consequently, attention has shifted toward how public money is allocated ahead of the state election.
Gala dinner accounts for largest share
The 2025 Premier’s Multicultural Gala Dinner cost $438,063.38, making it the largest expense.
Notably, entertainment and event services alone exceeded $340,000.
Additionally, marketing reached $50,015, while other costs approached $48,000.
Items included lantern decorations, table runners and presentation expenses.
Revenue offsets but questions remain
The gala reported $553,441.44 in revenue, although government funding covered most costs.
Therefore, questions remain about the overall value delivered to taxpayers.
Ticket sales contributed about $100,000, with public funds supporting the remainder.
Additional events push total higher
A Diwali State Reception in October 2025 cost $381,485.85, adding significantly to spending.
Meanwhile, venue hire exceeded $307,000, alongside production and entertainment costs.
Earlier, a Shrove Tuesday reception cost $11,407.64.
Together, these events pushed total taxpayer spending beyond $830,000.
Election year spending under spotlight
Similar events continued into 2026, including Lunar New Year and Iftar celebrations.
As a result, total spending may rise once full figures become available.
At the same time, allegations involving the Premier’s Private Office were referred for review.
The issue relates to a potential breach of the public sector code of conduct.

Governments have long supported cultural celebrations; however, spending levels now face stronger scrutiny.
