Woman struck outside Westfield Knox
Emergency services were called to Burwood Highway and Tyner Road after reports of an accident involving a bike rider. A woman was struck outside the Westfield Knox Shopping Centre. The collision happened around 7:30pm on Wednesday the 24th September. The crash occurred near the bus terminal car park entrance.
Collision with Silver Mitsubishi
The woman, in her 40’s riding what appeared to be an e-bike, was struck by a silver Mitsubishi Lancer. The incident occurred near the traffic-controlled intersection. Police managed traffic with 3 units ensuring the intersection was secured for emergency service personnel to safely manage the accident.
Eyewitness Accounts
Eyewitnesses to the accident confirm the motorist had a green light, the woman crossing in front of oncoming traffic. Despite the driver breaking, the accident could not be avoided. The rainy evening did not help matters.
It was also noted that the bike rider was not wearing a helmet. Several bystanders suggested the e-bike had no reflectors, and it was unclear if it had working lights.
Local Concerns
Locals also remarked about the volume of drivers who speed through Burwood Highway. With regards to the accident, this was not one of those occasions.
Some drivers while passing the accident did not observe the 40km/h rule, according to some bystanders. It brings into question driver behavior in the area in the absence of a Police presence.
Patient Treatment and Transportation
ALS (Advanced Life Support) paramedics treated the woman at the scene. She was later transported via road ambulance under lights and sirens to The Alfred Hospital with lower body injuries. Her condition is described as serious.
Road Safety and Bike Safety Reminder
This incident highlights the importance of bike safety for all riders. Wearing bright or reflective clothing makes cyclists more visible. Bikes should also have reflectors and front and rear lights. Cyclists should cross only at the lights and when safe to do so. Drivers are urged to be mindful of their speed, drive to conditions and above all – look left, look right, LOOK BIKE.
