Another Crash on Coleman Road
The Calamities continue:
Just after two o’clock on Tuesday afternoon, the 7th of October, emergency services rushed once again to Coleman Road in Boronia. Reports came in that a car had crashed directly into a local shopfront.
Dramatic CCTV footage from DIVYA Indian Groceries captured the terrifying moment. A white Kia ploughed into the front of the local convenience store, sending debris flying and leaving the shopfront heavily damaged. The proprietor of Divya Indian Groceries, a man by the name of Puru, remarked how the violent impact shook his entire store. His premises separated from the convenience store only by Benny Boy’s Pizza and another trader.
One of the metal park benches installed for patrons’ convenience was obliterated by the car on the way through the sidewalk.
Miraculous Escape for Shop Owners
Incredibly, the two proprietors of the Coleman’s Convenience Store escaped without injury. The driver, a woman in her sixties, was also fortunate to avoid injury. Witnesses said she appeared shaken and confused following the crash. Puru from Divya was quick to offer aid. His calm response to the situation showed remarkable composure under pressure.
Community Spirit Shines Through
The aftermath of the crash revealed the best of Boronia’s community spirit. Puru immediately checked on those nearby and offered help to everyone affected.
Meanwhile, Benny Boys Pizza, located between Divya and the convenience store, stepped in to assist. Staff provided power to the convenience store owners while they waited for their insurance company to arrive and for the damaged shopfront to be secured for the night.
Renewed Calls for Driver Testing
The incident has reignited debate about mandatory testing for “older” drivers. Locals at the scene expressed concern to Knox News with regards to the amount of accidents involving, in their words “older drivers”. It must be acknowledged that any categorisation of age is relative to one’s own.
It must also be said that the issue is fundamentally one of competency. Being tested from a certain age against a schedule supported by law would be a solution. How else would we ensure drivers relinquish their license at an appropriate time based solely on competency.
Community Opinions overflow on social media
Social media comments reflect an array of opinions. Some call for driving instructors needing to be subject to appropriate checks and balances to ensure acceptable standards are met and maintained.
Strong opinions exist in the community centered around all road users being subject to an Australian Driving test both practical and theory. This should ensure everybody knows the road rules and can competently drive. There is little faith in the international drivers’ license system.
Fears History will inevitably repeat?
Many residents recalled the tragic crash earlier this year, when a 91-year-old driver lost control on the same road, resulting in two fatalities. As the community reflects on yet another crash, Coleman Road stands as a reminder of how quickly routine moments can turn into great concern. Residents are once again calling for change to prevent further tragedies.
