Emergency response in View Street
Emergency services were called to View Street in Upwey about 4:50pm this afternoon, Wednesday the 4th of February after reports of a car fire. Soon after crews arrived, witnesses described a loud explosion as a 2010 BMW sedan erupted into flames while parked on the street.
Explosion destroys vehicle and sparks secondary fire
The blast completely destroyed the vehicle, sending flames and smoke into the air and ignited an overhanging tree.
Meanwhile, the force of the explosion scattered shattered glass several metres up a neighbouring driveway. Some larger debris struck a nearby power pole, damaging overhead power lines.
Owner Injured But Avoids Hospital
At the time of the explosion, the male owner was inside the vehicle. As a result, he suffered burns to his face and hair. Paramedics treated him at the scene, however he did not require hospital transport. Fortunately, no pedestrians were on the street when the explosion occurred.
Investigation Underway Into Possible Cause
Investigators have confirmed the fire is not being treated as suspicious. Police located a butane canister inside the boot, which may have contributed to the incident. In addition, many vehicles of this BMW model have the battery housed in the boot, a factor the investigators will also consider as inquiries continue.
