Community Alarm After Chaotic Meeting
Council Watch Vic Inc has reviewed the Knox mayoral election held on Thursday the 20th November. Moreover, what emerged was alarming reports from multiple witnesses. Several attendees described shouting, swearing and aggressive behaviour between councillors upon an ajourment. Furthermore, members of the public gallery told us they felt shocked and distressed by the conduct. Our follow-up inquiries confirmed that several allegations aligned with internal accounts.
Eight Rounds Reveal a Paralysed Council
The election stalled after eight deadlocked voting rounds. During each round, two councillors abstained in protest and blocked any clear majority. Those councillors were Cr Robert Williams and Cr Susan Pearce. As a result, frustration intensified and several councillors reportedly shouted at the abstaining pair. Repeated adjournments only increased tensions, and consequently, the chamber became increasingly unstable.
Knox Issues a Narrow, Careful Response
When approached for clarity, Knox released a single line stating that the election followed the Act and Governance Rules. However, they did not deny any allegations raised by observers. Therefore, significant questions remain about the councillors’ conduct and the broader culture inside the chamber.
Factional Conflict Now Impossible to Ignore
Council Watch Vic Inc has tracked several months of rising internal conflict. Currently, the councillor group appears divided into three competing factions. These divisions have damaged basic professionalism and eroded respectful decision-making. Additionally, recently reviewed correspondence shows ongoing hostility between several councillors.
Monitor Intervention Now Essential
Council Watch Vic Inc believes external intervention must now be considered. Ultimately, the community needs a council capable of respectful behaviour and stable governance. Knox cannot function while trapped in bullying, shouting matches and entrenched factional warfare. Still, councillors eventually elected a mayor, although the process exposed deep and longstanding divisions.
