Residents report flames and explosions
Emergency services rushed to Dandenong Creek Trail near Neal Street in Bayswater around 9:30pm yesterday. The CFA crews attended with a command vehicle, tanker, and slip-on unit. Residents reported flames and even hearing explosions in the area. Locals say bottles inside the first fire caused the loud blasts. A second fire was also lit just metres from the first. Authorities found no one nearby, but both fires appeared deliberately lit.
Ongoing trail fire concerns
The trail has seen several similar fires in recent months. Locals have observed the homeless camping in tents in the area and lighting fires in order to keep warm. One other possible explanation could be local fire bugs. The cause remains uncertain, with investigators unable to link anyone to the incidents at this time. Police also responded, but in the absence of anyone within the park grounds, no arrests were made.
