Emergency Services Respond to Backyard Fire in Wantirna
Residents in Angus Close, Wantirna, were left concerned this evening, Sunday 3rd August after thick black smoke and a strong, acrid smell filled the air, prompting a swift emergency response. Just before 7:45pm, multiple calls to emergency services reported the smoke, which was visible across the neighbourhood.
At least five residents gathered outside their homes, expressing concern about the source and potential danger of the smoke. Witnesses described the smoke as “dense and black,” raising fears of a structure fire or hazardous materials incident.
Fire Pit Identified as Smoke Source; Residents Reminded of Local Burning Rules
Crews from both the CFA (Country Fire Authority) and FRV (Fire Rescue Victoria) arrived at the scene with three firefighting units. Firefighters conducted a thorough search of the area and quickly located the source of the smoke: a backyard fire pit in use at a nearby property.
While no immediate danger was identified, firefighters took the opportunity to engage with residents and provide education around fire safety and local regulations. Homeowners were handed an informative leaflet titled “Can I? Can’t I?”—a guide provided by Knox City Council outlining what materials are permitted to be burned and what practices are prohibited under council guidelines.
