Firefighters Battle Early Morning Blaze
Fire Rescue Victoria responded to multiple Triple Zero calls about smoke at the Glen Waverley RSL shortly after 7:00am, Sunday the 8th of March. Crews arrived within three minutes and found fire burning in the roof space of the large building. Firefighters believed the blaze began in the kitchen area before spreading through the roof cavity. FRV and CFA crews wore breathing apparatus while attacking the fire. However, crews conducted an external attack because of concerns about the building’s structural integrity. Around 60 firefighters worked at the scene for two hours. Authorities declared the incident under control at 9:14am. Victoria Police also attended to assist emergency services.
War Memorabilia Saved
Importantly, no occupants were inside the building at the time of the fire. Meanwhile, firefighters worked with RSL staff to protect the club’s encased military memorabilia. Crews prioritised gaining access to the displays during the operation. As a result, the memorabilia remained intact, although some items may have minor smoke damage. However, the blaze caused extensive damage to both the gaming area and the members’ section of the building. Firefighters remain on scene monitoring for hotspots to prevent reignition.
The Changing Face of Glen Waverley amidst the SRL
The fire comes as Glen Waverley undergoes major change due to the Suburban Rail Loop project. The Suburban Rail Loop is a major underground rail project connecting Melbourne’s middle suburbs with a new orbital metro line. The first stage, SRL East, will run between Cheltenham and Box Hill through a 26-kilometre tunnel. The project will include six underground stations, including a new station at Glen Waverley. The station will sit about 17 metres underground and connect with the existing Glen Waverley line. Construction has already begun, with the line expected to open in 2035. Planning for the precinct includes major changes around Coleman Parade and the Glen Waverley activity centre.
Community Landmark Damaged
For many residents and veterans, the Glen Waverley RSL has long served as a community meeting place. The venue also honours local service members through its displays of military history and memorabilia. Although the building suffered significant fire damage, firefighters ensured those historic items survived. The future of the building now remains uncertain as investigators examine the cause of the blaze.
