Statewide Bin Rules Reach Knox
More than 60,000 recycling bins across Knox will soon receive new yellow lids.
Knox City Council will begin the rollout from 20 July. The change follows Victorian Government rules that standardise household bin colours statewide.
Council says the initiative will help residents identify the correct bin for household waste. Consequently, every Victorian council must eventually adopt the same lid colours.
However, some residents may question whether the change justifies the cost and resources involved.
What Residents Need to Know
From 20 July, residents must leave recycling bins out until 6pm on their usual collection day.
Council crews will replace lids during normal collection cycles. However, separate vehicles will complete the lid changes.
As a result, residents may see additional trucks operating through neighbourhood streets.
The rollout will occur gradually because more than 60,000 recycling lids require replacement.
Therefore, council has asked residents not to report delays if neighbouring properties receive new lids first.
Instead, residents should continue leaving bins out until 6pm every fortnight until crews complete the change.
Recycling Service Remains Unchanged
Importantly, recycling collections will continue as normal throughout the rollout.
Council confirmed residents can use recycling bins regardless of whether they have a blue or yellow lid.
Meanwhile, anyone who forgets to leave their bin out simply needs to try again on the next collection day.
No additional action is required unless a replacement lid has not arrived by 1 February 2027.
Necessary Improvement or Costly Exercise?
Council says the colour change will improve consistency across Victoria and reduce recycling confusion.
Nevertheless, some residents may wonder whether replacing thousands of functioning lids represents the best use of public funds.
The project also follows previous bin colour changes introduced across the municipality.
While standardisation may simplify waste education, questions remain about the overall cost of replacing lids that already perform their intended purpose.
As the rollout begins, Knox residents will likely form their own views on whether the benefits outweigh the expense.
