Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the death of a 37-year-old man who was taken into custody following a tense standoff with police at Clayton railway station on Sunday evening.
Police and Protective Service Officers were called to the Carinish Road station about 7.10pm after reports that a highly agitated man armed with a knife was on the concourse.
Witnesses reported the man appeared to be in a heightened state, pacing the station concourse before moving onto the railway tracks.
Officers made multiple attempts to negotiate with the man, but he continued to advance towards them. Police then deployed non-lethal tactical options, which were also unsuccessful in resolving the situation.
Specialist negotiators from the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) were called in and engaged with the man before he was taken into custody. Shortly afterward, he became unresponsive.
Ambulance paramedics, assisted by police, provided immediate medical treatment at the scene, but the man could not be revived.
Homicide Squad to Investigate
In line with standard procedure for any death in police custody, detectives from the Homicide Squad will investigate the incident, with independent oversight from Professional Standards Command.
Station Cordoned, Trains Halted
Police cordoned off the area to protect public safety during the incident, and train services through Clayton station were suspended while the response was underway.
