Millers Homestead Seeks New Community Tenant
A new chapter could soon begin for one of Knox’s most treasured heritage buildings.
Knox City Council has opened expressions of interest for a new tenant at Millers Homestead in Boronia. Consequently, eligible community groups and not-for-profit organisations now have the opportunity to lease the historic property.
The heritage-listed homestead, built in 1888, has become a popular community destination through arts, cultural and educational activities. However, Council now wants a long-term occupant who can continue bringing the site to life.
Community Groups Encouraged to Apply
Council has invited expressions of interest from organisations that can deliver community-focused programs while respecting the site’s heritage significance.
Additionally, applications remain open until the 31st of July 2026, giving interested organisations several weeks to prepare proposals.
The successful tenant will occupy one of Boronia’s most recognisable historic buildings. Moreover, the lease offers an opportunity to expand community activities within an established heritage setting.
Popular Venue Continues to Evolve
Earlier initiatives demonstrated strong community interest in the homestead.
Eastern Regional Libraries previously operated arts, history and literature programs from the site. As a result, almost 8,000 visits were recorded during the trial period.
Council later extended that tenancy after community feedback praised both the programming and the unique heritage setting.
Gardens Also Set for Restoration
Meanwhile, Council continues planning improvements to the surrounding gardens.
A recently completed Horticultural and Landscape Plan proposes restoration works that preserve the site’s historical character. Furthermore, the plan aims to improve accessibility, reduce maintenance demands and create more usable community spaces over the next decade.
The gardens include mature camellias and a significant Waterhousia tree dating from the homestead’s early years. Therefore, restoration will focus on protecting those heritage features while improving public enjoyment.
Heritage Building Remains Community Asset
Millers Homestead has stood in Boronia for almost 140 years.
Although the building has experienced periods of limited use, recent community programs have demonstrated its ongoing value.
Now, Council hopes a new tenant will ensure the historic property remains an active community hub for years to come.
