M1 Motorcycle Incident
A motorbike rider has been admitted to hospital this morning, Sunday the 5th of October after an accident on the M1. While the circumstances are unclear, the incident appears to have involved multiple motor vehicles. Emergency services were called to the outbound lanes of the Monash Freeway between Blackburn and Ferntree Gully Roads at approximately 8am this morning. A man in his 30s was treated at the scene and has been taken to The Alfred Hospital. His condition has been described as serious but in a stable condition with upper body injuries.

The Statistics
Although motorcycles account for only 4% of registered vehicles in Victoria, motorcyclists make up around 17% of deaths and serious injuries on the state’s roads. In recent years, there have been roughly 40 motorcycle rider fatalities annually, with over 2,500 riders injured each year. Over the past five years, nearly 200 riders and pillion passengers have died on Victorian roads. Additional breakdowns show that about 96% of those killed are male, and 57% are over 40 years old. Crashes in lower-speed zones (≤ 60 km/h) account for about 38% of fatalities, with 44% of those happening at intersections.
