Knox Gets a Splash of Colour:
Public spaces across Knox have been transformed with vibrant, locally inspired artworks, thanks to the talents of homegrown artists and strong community support. From Bayswater to The Basin, three stunning new murals are bringing fresh life and creative flair to local landmarks.
As part of a wider beautification initiative, the Knox City Council commissioned a series of mural projects that reflect the region’s unique natural beauty and community spirit. These artworks not only celebrate local flora and fauna but also honour the voices of residents who helped shape the outcome.
Chandler Oak mural
Mountain Highway, The Basin – Artist Christian Vine has reimagined the iconic Chandler Oak mural with a refreshed design that pays homage to the original while infusing the space with renewed vibrancy and texture.
Marie Wallace Park
Bayswater – Local artist @angharad.nw has created a playful and colourful mural that showcases native plants and animals, adding a sense of wonder and creativity to this much-loved park.
Upper Ferntree Gully CFA
Renowned muralist Jimmy Dvate, working with Vantage Point Radio, brought the local environment to life with vivid imagery of King Parrots and the striking Scarlet Robin, highlighting the biodiversity of the area.
Community Input Shapes Creative Direction
This artistic refresh was guided by community feedback through the Council’s Have Your Say survey. Of the responses received, a significant 72% of participants supported a refreshed look for the Chandler Oak mural, rather than a full restoration.
In response, Christian Vine was invited to reinterpret the mural in a way that respects its original meaning while introducing new creative energy. The result is a dynamic fusion of past and present—honouring heritage while embracing the future.
These mural projects are a testament to what’s possible when art, place, and community come together. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to explore these new public artworks and appreciate the creativity and collaboration that brought them to life.
