Knox City Council management has come under fire for resisting the federal government’s Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) worker retention payment. The Australian Services Union (ASU) is urging the council to accept the payment, which must be confirmed by September 24.
Rally Planned With Party Theme
The ASU has organised a rally outside the Knox Civic Centre on Monday, September 8, at 6.30pm. Supporters are encouraged to bring noisy toys to highlight the daily energy and responsibility carried by ECEC workers. The event will take on a party theme to symbolise resilience and community spirit.
Parents Voice Concerns Over Rising Fees
Parents have raised alarm about the high cost of childcare in Knox. One mother said she was struggling to afford care while working. Another parent described Knox childcare as the most expensive in the area. These concerns, combined with the council’s stance on retention payments, have increased pressure on management.
Union Condemns Council Messaging
The ASU has criticised council bosses for sending messages to staff that suggested workers are already well paid. The union argues this ignores the drawn-out process of considering the payment. ASU branch secretary Tash Wark described the decision as unfair, calling it “the height of meanness.”
Wider Community Support Urged
The ASU is asking both workers and community members to support childcare staff at the upcoming rally. Ms Wark urged families to stand with educators, stressing that council’s refusal is costing valued staff thousands of dollars.
