Knox Rubbish Bin Lid Change Nearing Completion
Knox City Council is ahead of schedule in its rollout to replace all residential rubbish bin lids from yellow to red, with nearly 60,000 bins—representing 86% of the total—already completed since the program began on 28 April.
Council acknowledges the community’s cooperation in leaving bins out on collection days, which has played a significant role in enabling this progress.
Approximately 10,000 rubbish bin lids still need to be swapped, with the remaining changes expected to take place over the coming months and completed by October.
What Residents Should Do if Their Lid Is Still Yellow
Residents yet to receive a red lid are asked to continue placing their bin out on their usual rubbish collection day every fortnight until the change occurs.
There is no need to contact Council if a lid has not yet been changed—even if neighbouring properties have received theirs. The same team that collects rubbish is responsible for the lid changes, and due to truck capacity limits, not all lids can be replaced on the same day.
Bins will continue to be collected as normal, regardless of whether they have a yellow or red lid.
If a bin has not received a red lid by 1 October, residents are encouraged to notify Council.
Why the Lid Colours Are Changing
This initiative is part of Victoria’s circular economy strategy, which aims to standardise bin lid colours across the state. The red lids are designed to make it easier for everyone to correctly sort their waste and contribute to improved waste management practices.
