A Quiet Street Turns Chaotic
A normally peaceful Wallace Road in Wantirna South turned very quickly into a scene punctuated by carnage. Yet another single vehicle accident in Knox just after 10:20pm last night, Wednesday the 22nd of October.
Emergency Services rushed to Wallace Road after the driver of a Tesla collided with a parked Volkswagen Polo.
What they encountered was much more.
From Fender-Bender to Fire Hydrant Flood
It’s alleged that the Tesla driver initially stopped after the first impact before making the questionable decision to drive off. Within moments, his escape took a disastrous turn.
He reportedly lost control just metres down the road, smashing into a fire hydrant before coming to rest against a tree on a nearby nature strip. If the height of the geyser was anything to go by, the water bill will be one for the ages.
Parents Pain
One has to feel for the parents having to be confronted by the whole affair. You know what they say, “youth is wasted on the young and with age comes wisdom”. Hindsight is a terrible friend, never there when you need them the most.
All Washed Up
The Tesla was left badly damaged and perhaps also was the driver’s pride. Witnesses say the man, believed to be a local, proved to be very wet behind the ears. It could have been the spray from the broken fire hydrant, but I expect more a reference to his experience.
Knox News understands that the vehicle’s onboard dashcam footage, already viewed by police, makes for interesting viewing. Officers tested the driver at the scene before taking him to Knox Police Station.
Residents Speak Out
The owner of the Volkswagen Polo took the incident in stride.
“It’s not the worst thing to happen in the street,” she told Knox News.
“One of the residents recently suffered a home invasion.”
Other locals described Wallace Road as a frequent shortcut for speeding motorists. While they love the leafy streetscape, they say the area desperately needs better lighting.
Unneighborly Behaviour
It’s understood the young man was local to the area. While making mistakes are a part of life and growing up, driving off (allegedly) after hitting someone’s car isn’t exactly the definition of being a good neighbour.
Fortunately, no one was injured.
The damage to the Volkswagon Polo, the fire hydrant and the Tesla, are matters of an entirely different nature.
