A New Home After Years of Uncertainty
Waverley RSL Sub-Branch has secured a new future in Glen Waverley.
The organisation has purchased the ibis Melbourne Glen Waverley hotel as its new home.
Previously, the State Government acquired its Coleman Parade site in May 2025.
That acquisition formed part of the Suburban Rail Loop project.
However, a recent fire further disrupted operations at the existing premises.
As a result, reopening there now appears unlikely.
Therefore, the hotel purchase provides stability after several difficult years.
Hotel to become community and veteran hub
The six-storey hotel includes 155 rooms, a restaurant, bar, and conference spaces.
Importantly, the ground floor will host RSL member services.
Plans include dining, hospitality, and expanded wellbeing support for veterans and families.
In addition, the venue will showcase memorabilia and honour service history.
Commemorative events will continue for the wider Waverley community.
These include ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day services.
Furthermore, the daily 6:00pm ode will return once operations begin.
First of its kind in Victoria
This move marks a significant shift for the RSL network.
Notably, it will be the first Melbourne Sub-Branch to operate accommodation.
It will also be the first in Victoria to rely on accommodation as its main income.
Consequently, the model introduces a new approach to funding veteran support.
The hotel will continue operating under the ibis brand.
Meanwhile, existing operator Accor will manage accommodation services.
Waverley RSL will work closely with Accor to integrate operations over time.
Transition period before full opening
The new site sits at 295–297 Springvale Road, Glen Waverley.
The Sub-Branch expects to establish an early presence soon.
However, full operations are not expected until sometime in 2027.
In the meantime, leaders are exploring an interim location.
Leaders welcome milestone moment
Waverley RSL President Neil Slaughter described the purchase as a turning point.
He said the new site will secure long-term support for veterans and families.
He also thanked Fire Rescue Victoria for protecting important memorabilia during the fire.
Those items will feature prominently in the new venue.
RSL Victoria President Dr Mark Schröffel welcomed the move.
He said revenue diversification remains vital for future sustainability.
Overall, the project signals a bold new chapter for Waverley RSL and its community.
