Construction Begins at Liberty Avenue Reserve
Work has started to revitalise Liberty Avenue Reserve in Rowville, with upgrades focused on flood management and safer shared paths. The project will modernise the reserve while improving stormwater flow, water quality, and environmental outcomes. Importantly, the works also aim to create a more accessible space for walkers and cyclists. As construction progresses, the reserve will gradually transform into a greener and more resilient community space.
Improving Stormwater and Water Quality
Firstly, crews will upgrade the existing floodway to better manage stormwater during heavy rainfall. A new dry creek bed will act as a natural filtration system. During storms, it will flow like a stream and filter runoff. However, during dry conditions the creek bed will remain empty, blending naturally into the landscape. As a result, the design will help improve water quality entering nearby waterways.
Creating Habitat for Local Wildlife
In addition, the project introduces new planting zones to support native plants and wildlife. These new habitats will strengthen biodiversity across the reserve. Over time, the area should attract birds, insects, and small animals. Consequently, the upgrade will improve both environmental health and the visual appeal of the park.
Safer Shared Paths for Walking and Cycling
The upgrade will also focus on improving access throughout the reserve. New and upgraded shared paths will make walking and cycling safer for residents. Temporary Closures During Construction
Meanwhile, some sections of the reserve will temporarily close while works continue. This includes parts of the shared path network. However, detour signage will guide visitors safely around construction zones. Council has indicated crews will work to minimise disruption wherever possible.
Expected Completion Early 2026
Construction is expected to finish between March and April 2026, weather permitting. Once complete, Liberty Avenue Reserve will offer improved flood protection, healthier waterways, and safer recreational access. For Rowville residents, the project promises a greener and more functional local reserve.
