Flammables & Smoking Alleged in Storage Blaze

Scoresby Storage Fire Erupts

A storage company says a customer allegedly storing flammable chemicals and smoking inside a storage unit sparked Friday morning’s major fire in Scoresby.

However, Victoria Police and the Country Fire Authority continue investigating the cause of the blaze.

The serious fire broke out at a self-storage facility on Koornang Road at approximately 8.00am on Friday the 3rd of July.

Company Alleges Storage Rules Breached

In a statement to customers, the storage facility said information currently available indicates the fire originated inside a customer’s storage unit.

The company alleges the customer stored flammable chemicals, breaching the storage agreement and facility rules.

It also alleges the customer lit a cigarette inside the storage unit, causing an explosion.

The company stressed that smoking and storing flammable or hazardous goods remain strictly prohibited anywhere on the property.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed those allegations, and investigations remain ongoing.

Major Emergency Response

The CFA responded to the incident at approximately 7.59am.

Thirteen CFA units attended alongside Fire Rescue Victoria, Ambulance Victoria and Victoria Police.

Firefighters estimated the facility, measuring approximately 140 metres by 50 metres, was around 50 per cent involved in fire.

A 33-year-old man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and paramedics transported him to hospital.

Emergency services also evacuated surrounding buildings as a precaution.

Additionally, power and gas providers attended the scene to assist emergency crews.

Customers Face Weeks Without Access

The company said the CFA and Victoria Police retain in control of the site while assessments continue.

Consequently, neither customers nor staff can access the facility until authorities formally hand the property back.

The operator expects that process could take one to two weeks.

Furthermore, staff cannot determine which storage units suffered damage until they complete a detailed assessment.

The company said it will contact customers with further information once access becomes available.

Investigation Continues

Emergency services previously issued an Advice message for Scoresby because smoke remained visible across surrounding areas.

Authorities advised there was no immediate threat to the wider community.

Meanwhile, Victoria Police continue investigating the cause of the fire.

Police urge anyone who witnessed suspicious behaviour or captured CCTV or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Emergency crews remain involved as investigators continue examining the scene.
