An elderly driver has reversed through a window at Oakleigh Central Shopping Centre, causing significant damage.
The incident occurred around 6pm, yesterday on Thursday the 17th July, when the sole occupant of the vehicle reversed backwards into the Shopping Centre, smashing through a glass window and ploughing through a car-parking payment machine.
The incident prompted a large response from emergency services, including Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria including MICA paramedics and Fire Rescue Victorias technical rescue capability. Fortunately, no serious injuries have been reported and no by standers were injured.
The driver initially refused medical treatment but was later accessed by paramedics.
This incident comes just a week after a tragic crash in Wantirna South, where a 91-year-old driver struck three pedestrians on Coleman Road around midday on July 10th.
A 59-year-old woman died at the scene, a 60-year-old man was taken to hospital but later died from his injuries, and a 2-year-old child sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The Wantirna South incident, reported by Knox News, has reignited community debate around whether older drivers should be subject to more frequent testing to ensure they remain safe to drive.
As investigations continue, the conversation around licensing requirements for elderly motorists is gaining renewed attention.
