Knox City Council has given the green light to a draft public toilet strategy that could reshape the way public amenities look and function across the municipality, with residents set to be invited to weigh in over the coming weeks.
The draft public toilet management policy and accompanying management plan were endorsed at council’s fortnightly meeting on Monday, 10 August, clearing the way for community consultation once it opens on council’s “Have Your Say” page.
At the heart of the draft policy is a shift away from the traditional multi-stall toilet block. Instead, council is proposing to move towards individual, self-contained cubicles across the municipality, along with all-gender facilities wherever possible — a change designed to improve privacy, safety and inclusivity for users.
Accessibility also features heavily in the plan, with proposals for more accessible cubicles built into future upgrades and new builds.
More broadly, the strategy is intended to guide how council plans, designs, builds, operates and eventually renews public toilets across Knox, taking into account everything from cleanliness and safety to sustainability and how facilities are positioned to meet community need.
For a municipality spanning suburbs from Bayswater and Boronia through to Rowville, Wantirna and the foothills suburbs of Ferntree Gully and The Basin, public toilets are a small but constant part of everyday council service — used by families at parks and sporting grounds, shoppers in activity centres, and visitors to reserves throughout the Dandenongs foothills.
Once consultation opens, Knox residents will be able to share their views on the draft plans, helping shape how the council rolls out toilet upgrades and new facilities in the years ahead.
